Founded in 2003, McCarty PhotoWorks is the commercial outlet for the imaginative work of photographer Brian McCarty. His passion for mainstream and Art-Toys is matched by the studio’s passion for producing images that blur the lines between art and commerce. McCarty’s trend-setting work gives life to his subjects and makes a personal, playful connection with viewers. Whatever the subject, the studio’s photographs are celebrated for the way in which they resonate with viewers.
The creative insight and unique techniques that are the trademarks of the studio result in images that are popular for a variety of applications. McCarty PhotoWorks’ clients come from both mainstream and edgy firms in advertising, design, music, entertainment, and publishing.
Often beginning with only a raw concept, the studio works as a creative partner to overcome obstacles and develop high-impact photography. McCarty PhotoWorks has the flexibility to fulfill the unique needs of its individual clients by offering a range of services, including art direction and high-end retouching.
Working as a focal point for artistic and commcercial collaboration, McCarty PhotoWorks maintains relationships with award-winning toy designers, set builders, and stylists. Any character, prop, wardrobe, or set can be crafted to create a truly one-of-a-kind image.
Brian McCarty is a Memphis-born toy photographer and director/producer. Working with toys for over 15 years, McCarty’s unique and innovative vision has attracted a huge international following. His postmodern integration of concept and character has earned McCarty’s photography a prominent position in the so-called "Art-Toy" movement. McCarty is featured in several books chronicling the artistic movement such as Vinyl Will Kill, Dot Dot Dash, and Toys: New Designs from the Art-Toy Revolution. His first monograph, titled Art-Toys, was released in 2010 by Los Angeles based Baby Tattoo Books.
McCarty earned his BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York City and then studied at the creative research centre Fabrica in Treviso, Italy. After returning to the states and working in-house for companies such as Mattel, McCarty founded his own studio and made it a focal point for artistic and commercial collaboration with others from the Art-Toy world. This body of work has earned notable praise from such places as L’Uomo Vogue, ABC World News, and XLR8R Magazine. His commercial photography roster has grown to include pop-culture clients such as Rockstar Games, MTV, and Cartoon Network.
McCarty is currently working on new photo projects while expanding his vision in new directions. He recently co-created, produced, and art-directed an animated series based upon his photography that went into development for Nickelodeon. In addition, he is currently serving on the board of directors for the PLATFORM International Animation Festival, focusing on cross-medium artistic collaborations.
