To paraphrase Emily Dickinson, there is a light that exists in spring that isn’t present any other time of the year. It’s not just the explosion of green and the return of warm, diffusing air; sunnier dispositions go a long way towards brightening the season. After what seemed an especially long and busy winter, I took extra notice of the Vernal equinox this past weekend and welcomed the arrival of spring with some time outdoors. A few years ago, I had the pleasure of spending a similar afternoon roaming around Malibu Creek State Park with the artistic duo Candy and Nicho, otherwise known as Noferin. I shot a prototype of their very first toy – a character named “Pandacake” from a series of innovative wooden figures. In the time since, Noferin has sold out several variations of their original Art-Toys. They’ve now moved on to more accessible and affordable “blind-box” figures that retain their signature style with wood from sustainable sources. I took a pair of these male and female “Jibibuts” back to the park in Malibu to capture a moment at play in the warm light of spring. The resulting image will be displayed in the upcoming show We Heart Wood at Munky King’s gallery on Melrose. The show opens on April 8th. Also premiering in April is an article on my work in FHM Germany. Because my foreign language skills are a little lacking, I have to rely on the wonders of Babelfish to read the piece: “Forced Perspective says the specialist, if a producer or Photographer its spectators by one sent selected camera angle wrong relative importance before-tells lies. That new ones photographer Brian McCarty is a master in this discipline…” Not sure exactly what I’m being called a master of, but it’s flattering all the same. The article gives the first published look at the cover image for my upcoming book. It’s been a long time coming, but I believe the end result is going to be well worth the wait. The project has given me an opportunity to work with some people that I hugely admire. All of the juicy details and wide release of the cover image will be coming soon. Hope you enjoy,
