ePostcard #64
Kaiju Monster Invasion

Kaiju is roughly translated from Japanese as “giant monster.” They are the heroes and villains of a pop-culture genre born in the 1950’s, featuring the likes of Godzilla, Ultraman, and Gamera. The influence of Kaiju on Pop Surrealism and Lowbrow Art is easy to see. The artists at the heart of the movement grew up with ubiquitous vinyl toys of these monsters made in Japan. The Art-Toy movement that subsequently arose can be seen as a reinterpretation of Kaiju through a Pop Surrealist filter.

During Art Basel Miami Beach in early December, Kaiju Monster Invasion will bring the most exciting and subversive artists from Japan and the United States into a single exhibition, showcasing the various interpretations of Kaiju in both Eastern and Western cultures. The exhibition aims to break new ground while simultaneously honoring the rich history of Kaiju.

I’m honored to be a part of the show. The piece I created, titled “Business as Usual,” gave me an opportunity to collaborate with the brilliant Mark Nagata. Mark designs and creates toys in classic Kaiju style. Eyezon, who towers over a dour businessman above, was “born from a mutant potato.”

The exhitibion at Art Center South Florida has an opening reception Wednesday, December 3rd from 8-10pm. Click on the banner for a link to more information.
