Kaiju is roughly translated from Japanese as “giant monster.” They are the heroes and villains of a pop-culture genre born in the 1950’s, featuring the likes of Godzilla, Ultraman, and Gamera. The influence of Kaiju on Pop Surrealism and Lowbrow Art is easy to see. The artists at the heart of the movement grew up with ubiquitous vinyl toys of these monsters made in Japan. The Art-Toy movement that subsequently arose can be seen as a reinterpretation of Kaiju through a Pop Surrealist filter. The exhitibion at Art Center South Florida has an opening reception Wednesday, December 3rd from 8-10pm. Click on the banner for a link to more information. When you get a moment, I invite you to check out the top down redesign of mccartyphotoworks.com! There are more big changes afoot, so stay tuned... Hope
