After all these years, I'm still blown away by the talent and caliber of the people I get to work with. A recent shoot had me especially humbled. Not only did I have an opportunity to directly incorporate illustration into a project, but I also got to do it for legendary musician DJ Shadow. Brought to life by a dream-team of creative thinkers, the Juke-Bot is designed by internationally renowned street artist and longtime Shadow collaborator Paul Insect, based on conceptual art by Ben Stokes. Production and sculpting credits go to Klim Kozinevich and Scott Wetterschneider of Bigshot Toyworks. Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow commissioned the Juke-Bot to tie-in with their rampantly successful series of "Hard Sell" DJ sets, which kicked off in front of 15,000 people at the world-famous Hollywood Bowl in June, 2007. "We conceived it as a throwback to a pre-digital era," Shadow explains. "There's something about a jukebox doing battle with pesky iPods that seems to resonate with people. It's a kind of protest against the technology rat-race, particularly where music is concerned." It seems a lot of my life is revolving around music lately. Cue the trumpets for this next bit... I am extremely excited to announce that a book of my work is coming out next year from Baby Tattoo Books. Titled Art-Toys: Photographs by Brian McCarty, the book focuses on the last five years of my work from within the growing art-toy revolution. What is even more exciting is that the brilliant Hugh Brown has come onboard to design the book and what will be a must-have collector's edition. Hugh's work has won countless awards, including four Grammys for album design. It is an honor to be working with him and Baby Tattoo. Over the coming months, I'll sneak out some more information on the book, but the big reveal will happen when it's all done, tentatively in the spring. Hope
you enjoy,
P.S. We just completed a long overdue update of the Portfolio section of the website. Check it out when you get a chance to see a lot of new work!
