Petit Lapin

London-based mr clement epitomizes the art-toy movement. Born in Hong Kong and currently matriculating at the Royal College of Art, he is an accidental toy designer; an artist simply focusing on his character-based vision. His Lapin character (seen above) was born in 2003 as a hand-made sculpture with a Tintin-like thirst for adventure. Since then, mr clement and Lapin have gone on three world tours, exhibiting in Paris, Hong Kong, and London.

As many artists with similar visions have done before, mr clement has made Lapin accessible to the masses through the production of toys. I had the pleasure of photographing one of his Petit Lapin for the current issue of Hi Fructose magazine. A stormy day in the fields of Malibu Creek felt like the right setting, especially with the knife close by his side.

Hi Fructose has had me out on a number of adventures lately. Their newly launched blog gives a sneak peek at a shoot I did a few weeks ago of Ashley Wood's upcoming toy "Bertie the Pipebomb," produced by Bigshot Toyworks and Threezero. The resulting photo will appear in issue #8, hitting stands in June/July.
