I've been spending a lot of my free time reading books on sociology and cultural anthropology as part of research for a new project. It's endlessly fascinating to take a step back and view pop subcultures in the context of rituals and communitas.

With a head full of Victor Turner and Dick Hebdige, it seemed fitting to photograph British Punks in Memphis as they visited the birthplace of it all. Sun Studio is where the first rock-and-roll single was recorded in 1951. It can subsequently be credited as the grandfather of most music-based subcultures. Without Sun, there would be no punk, goth, gangsta, hippie, mod, and countless other pop perspectives and ideologies.

As usual, there are a lot of exciting things brewing. Aside from the new project that has me blissfully buried in research, there is some very fun and flattering press. The April issue of Shutterbug includes a review of my work with blush-worthy quotes such as, "McCarty's flawless style and technique elevate these images from mere pictures of yard gnomes in incongruous settings á la Amelie to that of a pop art William Eggleston."

And if that weren't enough, the Turkish online magazine Fotoritim has an interview and feature on my work. I'm completely honored to be included in both publications.
