i am 8-bit

As a child, I spent endless hours defending cites from missile attacks and rescuing damsels held captive by a giant, barrel-tossing gorillas. The mall arcade and the Atari 2600 captivated my imagination while swallowing my allowance. It was a common passion for much of my generation, and the power of the video game has only grown over time.

Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles is host to an annual show that has become the event for children born into the age of Pac Man, Dig Dug, and Q-Bert. Curated by Jon Gibson, "i am 8-bit" features over 100 artists that have taken inspiration from classic video games to create original works for the show. I was flattered with an invitation to participate this year.

To capture my Frogger-inspired piece for the show, I spent a fun and interesting day driving the 101 Freeway with a plastic frog and camera mounted to the side of my car.

If you've read these e-cards over the years, the name Andrew Babin should be familiar. He once again lent his talents to help make my crazy idea a reality. Credit and thanks go to him for the camera and prop rigging. The rest of the shot came about by pre-composing the frog and relying on serendipity (and a wireless shutter button) to get the other cars where I wanted.
