Mods

Mods

The movement, with its dedication to fashion, music and pills, was the first massive, manifestation of youth culture, and formed the advance guard of the first truly post-war generation in England. The mods displayed more than a taste for sharp clothes and American music. Their real importance lay in the phenomenal success with which they created and communicated an alternative, and in many ways subversive, culture in the midst of an increasingly affluent society.

-Alan Fletcher, 1979

Mod culture has been through several revivals and reinventions since 1964, with Los Angeles often at the center. Over the years the youth culture of Southern California has taken mod and merged it with everything from ska to punk. You only have to pick up a copy of the 1984 cult classic Repo Man to see what I'm talking about. Influential ska band The Untouchables can be seen tearing up the streets on their scooters.

Another twenty years on and the scene is still alive and well here. In between gigs, Jerry from the Untouchables even rides with the Westside Scooter Club out of Santa Monica. When I've got the time I'm out there too on a restored '63 Lambretta.

Because of my love for vintage scooters and the friends I've made in the scene, the last assignment I worked on was a real treat. Fashion company Merc London is producing figures that take a tongue-in-cheek look a range of classic subcultures. The Rude-Boy and Mod characters were a perfect fit with the smart-styled Reflections Scooter Society out of Hollywood. They're seen above at favorite hang out Bob's Big Boy.

Hope you enjoy!
-Brian
