monkey vs. robot

While in North Carolina last week for a lecture at UNC Chapel Hill and exhibition, I took a trip to downtown Raleigh with Heather from Wootini and her 3-year-old daughter Amzie. There, we found the perfect location for me to shoot the amazing monkey-assassin for Monkey vs. Robot.

Considering the shoot was done with ambient lighting, car headlights, a reflector, and a flashlight, it reminds me of something that I've been trying to articulate to a client over the prospect of 8 art directors and account reps on location with me - I'm often not very impressive to watch work... unless you think a guy kneeling over a camera while holding a reflector is exciting.

There is a quote from the architect Frank Gehry that hits home for me:

"Even though I often put as much detail work into what I do as anyone, it always appears casual. That's the edge I'm after. For people to see what I want them to see, but for them not to be quite sure if it was designed or if it just happened."

P.S. New York Toy Fair is only days away. I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of new toys and even more old friends. Just have to watch out for the monkeys...
